COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. — The Collierville School district has decided to cancel classes at one school due to a high number of flu cases or flu-like symptoms.
West Collierville Middle School will be closed for the remainder of the week.
Nearly one-third of the student body — 462 of 1,286 students — was absent Wednesday, district officials said.
“After thorough consideration of attendance trends for both students and teachers and the number of unfilled substitute teacher requests at the school, the superintendent and staff have concluded that this is the most prudent course of action,” the district said in a released statement Wednesday.
The closure will give students and staff the time to recover while also giving officials enough time to sanitize the entire school.
All other schools and offices will be open.
“It breaks my heart to see the school close, but I know it’s a concern for everyone to stay healthy because this is flu season,” said Elizabeth Covington, mom of a seventh grader.
Covington said she picked her son up early from West Collierville Middle School on Wednesday. She said her son just got over his flu symptoms Monday.
