MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police were called to Southeast Memphis early Thursday morning after a shooting and crash that proved deadly.
It happened on Apple Blossom Drive just after 2 a.m. Thursday.
“I had to get dressed with my light on from my camera. I had to get dressed.”
Crews with Memphis Light, Gas and Water were also on the scene, repairing electricity for about 100 customers left in the dark after a shooting victim crashed into a transformer.
Police said the victim was dead when they got on the scene.
One person who didn’t want to be identified said the driver got into a disagreement with someone from the neighborhood a couple hours before he was killed.
“He got into his truck and started to take off and went down that way, and that’s when they got to shooting at him. So, I guess he came back later on.”
Police said the victim was shot just after 2 a.m. Thursday. Several hours later, you could still see bullet holes in another car parked near his truck.
One neighbor told WREG’s Melissa Moon she heard gunfire but didn’t think much about it.
“Look. I hear shooting every night.”
Another neighbor said he has complained to police for years about drug activity in the area, but nothing has been done about it.
The city’s data shows over the last six months that more than a hundred incidents have been reported in the neighborhood. Most of them were assault, property crimes and drug crimes.
Homicides in Memphis are up about 30 percent over 2019. There have been more than 120 murders in Memphis, putting back on track for a record year.
