(Memphis) Maxine Smith, a long-time civil rights activist has died at age 83.

Last year she battled serious health problems, including a heart condition.

Smith was a civil rights icon.

Many are commenting on her passing:

“We lost a great crusader of civil rights today.  Dr. Maxine Smith committed her life to help people reach their fullest potential. Her dedication made an impact on countless persons not only here locally, but across the nation.

I join with many others in our community to offer my sympathy about her death.  May the inspiring words she lived by now bring comfort to her family and all of those who loved her.”

The entire board and staff of the National Civil Rights Museum is deeply saddened to learn about the death of one this city’s most important civil rights icons.  Maxine had a fearless and courageous manner in which she confronted the most challenging civil rights issues.  Her tenacity, persistence and dogged determination ensured that issues were effectively resolved.

Not only have I lost a stellar board member, but I have also lost a very close, personal friend.
