MEMPHIS, Tenn. — LeMoyne-Owen College announced on its website Thursday that Dr. Vernell Bennett-Fairs was selected by the board as the college’s new president.

“I’m honored to be chosen as the 13th president of Lemoyne-Owen College and I’m excited about moving to Memphis,” Bennett-Fairs said.

Bennett-Fairs would begin in the post in the spring 2021 semester. She has most recently served at Delta State University, the college said in a video release.

The Fisk University graduate brings more than 25 years of experience in higher education to the college.

“I saw that same sense of community,” said Bennett-Fairs. “That same sense of nurturing of students. The same sense of the whole campus coming together in support of students. I just see that there at Lemoyne-Owen.”

Bennett-Fairs says she plans to focus on the four r’s: recruitment, retention, relationships, and revenue.

Eighteen months ago, the board parted ways with the former president after concerns from staff and students about her leadership. Bennett-fairs says building relationships is a priority.

“You’re going to see me at the honor society presentations. You’re going to see me at the probates. Those relationships are at the foundation of my happiness on a campus,” Bennett-Fairs said.

But she also faces some obstacles. Board of Trustees chair Patricia Covington says due to the pandemic, enrollment has dropped.

“That will be a significant focus area or continue to be a significant focus area for us to understand what student’s needs are so they can continue their education,” Covington said.

Bennett-Fairs says she’s already spent time finding ways to engage with students to better understand those needs.

“If there’s any message from this to the students it is their concerns and opinions matter to me,” Bennett-Fairs said.

Bennett-Fairs first day of work is January 5. Dr. Carol Johnson Dean currently serves as interim president.
