MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police said officers are on the scene of a shooting in the 5900 block of East Raines Road, near the intersection of Raines Rd. and Hickory Hill Rd. at a gas station.

MPD said when they arrived they found one man who has been shot, and he was pronounced dead on the scene. People came to the area to see what was going on and shortly after, investigators walked over and told family members what they feared had happened that their loved one had been shot and killed.

Cedric Birdsong stood on the sidelines and waited for answers after he heard his son had been shot at the Raines In and Out on East Raines in Hickory Hill.

“I haven’t heard anything as far as pertaining to what’s going on,” Birdsong said “All I know is something happened with my son. That’s all I can tell you.”

Around 6 p.m., police said a man had been shot and was dead when they arrived at the scene. Birdsong said he is in disbelief.

“I don’t want to accept that. I don’t want to believe that,” Birdsong said.

Birdsong identified the victim as his son, 21-year-old Cedric Birdsong. He said his son was like any other 21-year-old: hardworking and just trying to find his way in life – certainly not someone who deserves to have his life cut short in this manner.

“He don’t bother nobody. He hasn’t been in no trouble or nothing like that. I don’t understand,” Birdsong said.

Antonio Snipes, a family friend, said, “That was his son and he loved him. So if anybody heard anything now is the time to step forward and do what’s right.”

Additionally, Memphis Police said no suspect information has been provided at this point.
