MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police say a shooting that left a man dead in South Memphis Wednesday night may have been accidental.

On Thursday, police released a statement saying they are looking into the possiblity it was an accidental shooting, but have not finished their investigation.

WREG’s Quametra Wilborn spoke to the owner of the home on East McKellar. She said she wasn’t there when the shooting happened, but believed it was an accident.

“The baby was sitting here with his gun and he shot himself. It went off,” she said.

She confirmed that the gun belonged to the victim. She also stated she’s known the victim for years and he would often come to her home to visit her children who are his close friends.

“It’s tragic out here. You can’t even protect them in your own home,” she said.

Several hours earlier, homicide detectives and crime scene investigators could be seen going in and out of the house at the corner of East McKellar and South Main, but at the time would not say what happened inside.

Relatives told WREG-TV the victim was an 18-year-old man.

We saw Memphis Animal Services remove a dog from the house.

Memphis Police said there is no suspect information right now. They are urging anyone who knows anything to call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
