MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police are investigating a shooting that left one man critically wounded in northeast Memphis Sunday afternoon.
MPD said one man was shot in the 6100 block of Shelby Oaks and was transported to Regional One Hospital. The shooting happened near the Oyo Hotel.
According to police, witnesses saw the victim and Julion Saunders arguing in the parking lot before she allegedly dragged the victim with her vehicle. She then reportedly tried to hit the man with her car before shooting him in the face.
Sometime later, police said she called dispatch and confessed to shooting her boyfriend.
One man spoke with WREG-TV and said he knows the victim and had spoken to him just moments before the shooting.
“I’m the last person that touched his hand and told him to ‘just leave it alone. You know whatever it is just be a man about it’. And before I knew it 10 or 15 minutes later, I get phone calls saying he had been shot,” the man said.
“It didn’t have to happen like that. It could’ve went another way.”
This isn’t the first time Memphis Police have had to make their presence known in this area. Just a few days ago, they responded to another shooting less than a block away.
On Friday, Memphis Police responded to a shooting where a group of teens tried to steal a car left running at the Waffle House on Sycamore Drive. When the victim went outside to try to get his car back, he was shot by another young man.
The man we spoke to says these acts of violence are just reminders to always be aware of his surroundings.
“I could be a humble person but this person may not be a humble person. I could be one to walk away but this person may not let me walk away. So, I try to stay away from that period,” the man said.
This investigation is ongoing.
