MEMPHIS, Tenn. — At least three children were injured in two separate shootings Thursday night in Memphis.
People living near the Greenlaw Community Center in North Memphis near Uptown said it’st’s usually a safe space for kids to just be kids, but they were surprised to learn that two children were shot across the street.
Witnesses said after hearing the gunshots, they looked outside their windows and saw a child in the alley suffering from gunshot wounds.
“This front porch is one that kids come to all the time. So, I think that’s what breaks my heart the most is knowing that I probably know the child who was hit and it doesn’t make sense,” said one neighbor who didn’t want to be identified.
Police were called to Greenlaw Alley around 11 p.m. Thursday where two children, ages 14 and 16, were shot. The youngest was transported to the hospital in critical condition while the teen was listed as being in non-critical condition.
Authorities said the suspect was possibly in a red Nissan with black rims.
This wasn’t the only shooting involving a child overnight. Police were called to Ezell Street in East Memphis around 2 a.m. Friday. Police said seven people were inside a home asleep when someone drove by and started shooting.
A 15-year-old boy was shot and transported to the hospital with non-critical injuries.
Authorities initially said another juvenile was discovered at the Q-Mart near the corner of South Third and South Parkway. They corrected that information several hours later saying two adult males were shot at Olive and Michigan, and taken to the hospital.
