MEMPHIs, Tenn. — A Memphis police officer was taken to a hospital in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Memphis Fire Department, the incident happened in the 700 block of Alma near Jackson Avenue.
Police say uniformed officers went to serve a subpoena at 1:25. They saw the person they were serving in the front yard of a house. The person got into a Ford Fusion with the passenger’s door open.
They say the officer tried to hand the driver a subpoena through the passenger side door. That’s when the suspect backed up into an unmarked patrol car, hitting and dragging the officer with the door.
But the suspect’s sister tells WREG’s Luke Jones a different story. She claims a plain-clothes officer opened the door and jumped in the car without identifying himself.
A police spokeswoman later clarified that officers weren’t wearing “typical” police uniforms, but were wearing the regular uniforms of a special unit. She said their gun and badge were visible.
Police have not released the suspect’s name or said whether there are charges. A passenger fled the scene.
