MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police say a man and woman from Arkansas were in critical condition after a shooting Thursday afternoon at Interstate 240 and 385 in East Memphis.

Both victims were headed west on I-240 a white rental truck, police said.

The victims told police that they were coming from Poplar Avenue on the interstate when a black Nissan pulled up beside them. The front and back passengers rolled down their windows and opened fire with semiautomatic handguns.

The man was struck in the pelvis and wrist, the woman in the chest and arm. He didn’t realize he’d been shot until he saw blood, he said. He then noticed his girlfriend had also been shot.

The man told police he heard at least 11 shots. Officers collected at least 16 shell casings.

No arrests have been made. The victims were taken to Regional One in critical condition.

According to Regional One Hospital, both of the victims were treated and released Thursday.

I-240 was closed to traffic between Poplar and 385. Eastbound lanes remained open, but westbound traffic was detoured onto Poplar. Later Thursday evening, police said all lanes of traffic were open again.
