MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two people are in critical condition after being shot overnight in the Cherokee neighborhood, according to Memphis Police.
Memphis Police said officers responded to the shooting around 12:30 a.m. When they arrived, they located one victim in the 1600 block of Eastlawn St. and then located another victim in the 1400 block of Crider.
According to the affidavit, as one of the victims was being transported to the hospital, he told first responders that Robert Brown shot him.
Subsequently, Brown was detained on the scene.
Investigators went to an area hospital to get a statement from the other victim. That victim told officers he and his friend were sitting inside his car parked in the driveway drinking. According to victim, Brown told them he was about to go to the bathroom inside of the house, but he returned from the residence and began firing shots at them
The shooting victim told investigators he jumped out of the car and started running. He identified Brown in a photograph lineup. The other victim was unavailable to give a statement, as he was in surgery for his injuries.
Police then obtained a search warrant and found a handgun. Brown was arrested and when questioned, he told officers that the two victims assaulted him a month ago.
Now, Brown is facing several charges including two counts of Attempted First Degree Murder.
Both shooting victims were transported to area hospitals in critical condition.
People who live in the community said they are hoping for an end to the continuous violence that’s plaguing their community.
“Really just trying to get down to the bottom of what’s really going on that’s causing so much havoc in this city,” said Reverend Reginald Tucker.
Tucker said he’s been living in the community for three years. He said make no mistake about it, this is not the norm here.
“It is an alarm that it is starting to get close, because it’s been isolated, (a) real quiet community,” said Tucker.
Meanwhile others are fighting to end the gun violence. There is concern even more crime could be right around the corner.
Reverend Tucker said this is why he is always calling on a higher being.
“We have to really just pray for the state of mind of our children, the people,” said Tucker.
