MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is in jail on a $1 million bond after Memphis Police said he shot another man seven times. Witnesses say it happened after a child’s birthday party.

Maquayle Britt faces one count of attempted first-degree murder and employing a firearm with the intent to commit a felony.

A shattered window remains as a reminder to people living at the Lakes at Ridgeway what happened on September 4. This latest incident is just one of many.

A woman at the complex didn’t want to be identified, but said she was visiting her grandchildren when she noticed a children’s birthday party happening at one of the units.

She said she saw a man and woman having an argument outside.

“It seemed like she was agitated about something,” the woman said. “She was talking to a young man and she was telling him ‘I can’t take this. I can’t take this. He got to go.'”

After the argument, people in the area said the suspect threw something into the victim’s window. Shortly after, he left, but then they said he returned locked and loaded.

“Pow, pow, pow, pow, pow. I told my little kids get down on the floor,” the woman told us. “Get down on the floor because bullets don’t have a name.”

Memphis Police said they found a man lying on the living room floor suffering from seven gunshot wounds.

Court documents show he told officers he saw his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, Britt, shoot him from the patio of the apartment.

Police said the victim confirmed Britt was at the birthday party earlier in the day and had been arguing with family members.

No one else was injured but the woman we spoke to said her grandchildren were in a nearby unit when the shooting happened.

“No matter where you go, somebody is going to be acting crazy and they’re going to get into it with somebody and they’re going to be shooting,” the woman said.
