
News Channel 3 meteorologist Jim Jaggers has been forecasting the weather on television and radio in Memphis since 1978.
In 2023, Jim was named Broadcaster of the Year by the National Weather Association and awarded the June Bacon-Bercey Award for Broadcast Meteorology (formerly known as the Broadcast Meteorologist of the Year) from the American Meteorological Society (AMS). Only one other time in the history of these awards were they awarded in the same year to the same person.
Jim is proud of his AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation certifying him as a meteorologist in the field of broadcasting. Jim has spent a good portion of his career in service to the AMS. He has served as chairman of the board of broadcast meteorology and served on the broadcast board judging AMS Seal candidates. He was given an AMS Special Award for assisting the AMS in writing and implementing a new Certified Broadcast Meteorology test that replaces the original AMS Seal.
Jim also has a Seal of Approval from the National Weather Association in both television and radio forecasting.
Jim won an Emmy in 2013 for breaking news coverage of the February 5 tornado that hit Shelby County in the Whitehaven area of Memphis. In 2015, Jim won a second Emmy recognizing his community service work supporting Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital through his annual bicycle ride known as “Go Jim Go”. To date, the bicycle ride has raised more than $4 million in donations for the hospital. In 2019, Jim was also honored for his dedication to Le Bonheur with a Leadership Foundation Service to Community award in the TV medium market category.
Jim has hosted WREG TV’s Knowledge Bowl since 2005 and enjoys quizzing high school students vying to win college scholarships.
Jim attended Michigan State University where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in telecommunications with a minor in theater and journalism. He earned a Master of Science degree from what was then Memphis State University in geography concentrating in atmospheric sciences.
When he’s not on the air, Jim spends time with his wife, family, and church.
