(NEXSTAR) — Super Bowl LIX has come and gone, which means it’s time for NFL fans to set their sights on next season.

Part of that — at least for a subset of fans — will be dedicated to guessing who will appear in the Big Game next. You could base it off of analytics, history books, superstitions, Magic 8 balls, or, if you subscribe to the belief that the NFL is scripted, the logo for Super Bowl LX.

Logos for each Super Bowl are released shortly after the prior Super Bowl has ended but well before the preceding season begins.

Some fans, however, have recently claimed that the colors selected for the logo will offer insight into the two teams that will appear in that Super Bowl.

For example, the logo for Super Bowl LVI was orange and yellow. Those colors also happen to be part of the swatches used by the participating teams, the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Rams. The next Super Bowl, LVII, featured the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. The logo that year had two main colors: red and green.

The logo for last year’s championship, Super Bowl LVIII, was purple and red. Before the matchup was set, the two teams projected to go all the way were the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers — which sport purple and red, respectively.

Coincidence? Most likely.

If you don’t recall, only one of those teams — the 49ers — made it to the Super Bowl to face off against the red-clad Chiefs.

Super Bowl LIX again had red in the logo, as well as lime green. Once again, teams that wear red and green competed in Sunday’s Super Bowl — though one could argue the green in the Super Bowl LIX logo was largely more akin to the lime green uniforms worn by the Seattle Seahawks than the Eagles.

The logo for Super Bowl LX, however, is apparently trying to avoid any speculation about which teams will be vying for the Lombardi Trophy in 2026.

Shared Monday by the host committee and the 49ers (Levi Stadium in San Francisco will be hosting Super Bowl LX), the new logo incorporates nearly every color of the rainbow.

There are multiple shades of blue to represent the sky, the buildings of San Francisco, and the rolling hills nearby. There are trees of hot pink, bright green, and yellow. The Golden Gate Bridge isn’t golden at all but pink, purple, and red. What is presumably the San Francisco Bay is yellow and white. The only color that has seemingly been left out is orange (sorry Cincinnati, Cleveland, Chicago, Miami, and Denver).

With all of those colors present, it’s not as easy for conspiracy theorists to land on any two teams that could be playing in the Super Bowl.

No team wears pink, but the color combinations could give off a “Miami Vice” vibe, which could also be construed as a nod to the Miami Dolphins. The prominent pairing of green and yellow could catch the attention of Green Bay Packers fans. Beyond the colors, the presence of the Golden Gate Bridge could be fuel enough for speculation that the 49ers will play in the game.

In case you’re wondering, only twice has the host team appeared in the Super Bowl: in 2022, when the Los Angeles Rams played the Bengals at home (SoFi Stadium) and in 2021, when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hosted the Chiefs at Raymond James Stadium. In both cases, the host team won.

Back to the color theory: It is worth noting that avoiding any team colors in the Super Bowl logo is difficult. Five teams use red as a primary color while six others have it as a secondary color. Twelve teams use a shade of blue for their primary color while a handful use it as a secondary color.

Nonetheless, the color conspiracy lives on and will likely come into play again next season for Super Bowl LX, regardless of how many colors are in the logo.

What we can glean from the logo is where Super Bowl LX will be hosted: San Francisco. Technically, we knew that without the logo, but the marketing team at the NFL is continuing a recent trend of incorporating the host city into the design.

The Super Bowl LIX logo, for example, was created by New Orleans artist Tahj “Queen Tahj” Williams. She became the first person to handcraft the Super Bowl logo and theme art, using intricate beadwork to reflect the spirit of New Orleans and celebrate Black Masking culture.
