MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One person is dead and another is in the hospital after a shooting in the heart of downtown, Memphis Police said.
The shooting happened around 2:40 p.m. in the 100 block of George W. Lee Avenue.
Police are calling the shooting a “targeted incident.”
Several police vehicles and crime scene tape blocked off parts of downtown as they looked to piece together what happened.
According to police, the suspects got out of a white car and shot at the two victims. They did not say what type of car the suspects were in.
Detectives from the real-time crime center tracked the vehicle as it fled outside of the Memphis area.
One person is dead and the other victim is recovering at Regional One.
“So we’re convinced that vehicle has fled the downtown area. Certainly want everybody to be on the lookout for this white vehicle. We put out a citywide broadcast on that vehicle,” said MPD Assistant Chief Don Crowe. “Currently, we have detectives from the homicide unit. We have detectives from the CSI unit on the scene conducting the investigation. Hopefully, we’ll be able to develop suspect information real quickly.”
In a statement released by MPD, they said in part, “We want to assure our community and visitors that downtown Memphis is a safe place. This incident was not a random act of violence. MPD is committed to bringing those responsible to justice.”
