SELMER, Tenn. — Two people were killed in Selmer Saturday after a car drove through a barricade and into a crowd.
The incident occurred at Court Avenue and Third Street around 1:30 p.m. About 1000 people were in the area for the Rockabilly Highway Revival Festival.
The barrel barricade was blocked off a road that was closed for the festival.
Two people, a male and a female pedestrian, were killed. Friends and loved ones identified them as Michael Johnson, 62, and Sherri King-Duncan, 51, who were engaged to be married.
The driver, 91-year-old Aaron Stamey, and passenger Lois Stamey in that car were also hurt. One of the wounded was transported by helicopter to a hospital, according to a Tennessee Highway Patrol spokesman.
The McNairy County Sheriff’s Department has turned the investigation over to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
A car also crashed into a large crowd in Selmer back in 2007.
The car was a drag-racing vehicle that lost control, and the driver was a professional drag racer.
Six people were killed, all of them in their teens and early 20s. Twenty-three others were hurt as well, including the driver and 5-year-old.
It happened at the annual Cars for Kids charity show.
