BLADEN COUNTY, N.C. — Two people died in a submerged vehicle in Bladen County, North Carolina.

A third passenger was able to escape from the car and alert authorities, according to Matt Hardee with North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Emergency crews have not been able to recover the bodies because the flood waters are too high to access the vehicle, Hardee says.

Several roads are closed in the county and crews are working to get to the hardest hit areas when it’s safe, officials said.

This brings the total number of storm-related fatalities in the U.S. to six people. Four deaths were previously reported in Florida.

Hundreds died from the hurricane in the Caribbean, mostly in Haiti.
