MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Employees were in for an alarming afternoon at the airport after two FedEx employees were hurt after lightning struck.
It happened shortly before 3 p.m. at the FedEx Hub.
“I called her phone, but she didn’t answer. I’ll try to call her back.”
People throughout the city spent the evening trying to get in touch with their loved ones who work there to make sure they’re okay.
“My best friend actually has been working there for like 15 years, so I will give him a call to find out what’s going on,” said Wilbraforce Wafula.
One man we spoke to used to work at the hub and said when he was there safety was a priority.
“It depends on what department you’re in, but some departments have problems,” he said.
No one with FedEx would go on camera, but they did release the following statement:
“We can confirm that two hub employees were hospitalized for examination this afternoon when they reported feeling unwell. The safety and well-being of our team members is of the utmost importance, and we are investigating this incident.”
“Wery strong thunderstorms, and moving very fast around 60 mph.”
WREG’s Jim Jaggers told us there was a lot of lightning over the airport around 3 p.m., the same time the paramedics got the call.
“Right in that area, we are seeing a lot of lightning activity going on,” he said.
Airport police are investigating the incident and told us a report would be available soon.
Both employees are expected to be okay.
