Mother says 3-year-old boy shot in Mississippi ‘doing fine’

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 3-year-old boy is recovering after he was shot in Tunica, Mississippi on Tuesday.

The Tunica County Sheriff’s Office says they responded to a 911 call at the Tunica Courts Apartments on old Highway 61. They found a boy there with an apparent gunshot wound to the back.

The boy was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis.

So far, investigators aren’t saying if anyone has been charged. The Department of Human Services is assisting county authorities in the investigation.

On Wednesday, the boy was identified by his mother as Carlos Hillard. Te’Airra Robinson said there was a fight in the apartment between two women and someone pulled a gun.

“They were fighting and one of the people had pulled out a gun, trying to shoot the other person, and ended up shooting my son,” Robinson said. Authorities have not confirmed what Robinson told WREG.

The child was shot in the back but is expected to be okay.

“He’s doing fine. He’s playing and watching TV,” said his mother.

Robinson said when Carlos is released from the hospital Wednesday, she won’t have custody.

Family members say they are grateful Carlos is a fighter, and said they are praying Robinson will get through this.

“My aunt, she’s a good momma and she’s a strong woman, and I know she can make through all this,” said relative Keddra Jackson, who said Carlos was “a soldier.”
