MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police say a suspect is on the run after robbing a 63-year-old woman in broad daylight. The suspect made off with her purse, but the woman didn’t give up so easily and actually took off after him.

Police said it happened last Thursday, as Sheila Sanderson was walking from the parking garage at the Crescent Center at Poplar and Ridgeway in east Memphis.

Sanderson chased the suspect back into the garage and fell, hitting her face. The suspect got away.

People in the area were surprised to hear the news of the robbery.

“There’s a lot of businesses are in this area and this is next to a very nice restaurant so you wouldn’t expect that,” one man who was exiting the parking lot said.

Others said they see why she went after the robber.

“If it was me I probably would’ve done the exact same thing ’cause it’s my personal belongings and I wouldn’t want anything to happen, like if it was any of my credit cards,” another driver said.

Police said the suspect was believed to be driving a black four door vehicle, possibly a Mazda, with Tennessee tag 870LQT.

Employees at the Crescent Center would not comment on the robbery but said the victim was “OK.”
