83-year-old Germantown man starting neighborhood patrol after robberies

GERMANTOWN, Tenn. — Germantown Police increased patrols in neighborhoods after three people were robbed in a week. The latest one was on Friday night on Hazelton Drive in a gated subdivision.

Now some people aren’t waiting around to be the next victim.

It was tough not to walk a block in the neighborhood off Poplar Estates Parkway and not see a police cruiser Monday afternoon. People living in the area said seeing the extra resources out on the streets makes them feel safer.

“It’s just a terrible situation and I want it stopped,” Billy Mullins, who has lived in his home for 18 years, said.

He lives not far from one of the recent robberies.

Mullins said he appreciates the added police presence, but said that might not be enough. He said he knows his community has a Neighborhood Watch, but he plans to start his own patrol and work with his neighbors.

“I’m gonna take down the description of the car and license number,” Mullins said.

Making his rounds with his little dog Sadie, Mullins said he doesn’t plan to approach any suspicious cars, but said if he sees something strange, he’ll call police.

Just down the street from Mullins lives John Vogel. Several years ago, he was robbed at his home. In his case, the suspects were caught. Since these recent robberies, he’s been extra vigilant too, but said he has faith in the police department.

“The Germantown Police they do a great job, they’ll catch em,” Vogel said.

Mullins said he believes the chances of catching the culprit will be higher if the community works together.

“And I’m gonna do what I can and I think if other people did the same thing we’d soon put an end to this,” Mullins said.

Germantown Police said due to the holiday, they do not have any updates on the case.
