MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police say a security guard at a Cordova grocery store opened fire on a man suspected of stealing meat from the store.
It happened around noon Sunday at the Kroger on Germantown Parkway at Trinity Commons.
According to police, the suspect loaded a cart full of meat and chips and headed for the exit. When approached by the guard, the suspect stated a friend of his outside had the receipt. He then left the store and walked towards the gas pump with the guard right behind him.
As the suspect loaded the items in his car, the security guard stood behind the vehicle to get a picture of the tag. He was still behind it when the suspect put the car into reverse and started backing out of the parking space. The vehicle “nipped” the man’s toes.
That’s when the security guard said he pulled out his gun and fired once at the left rear tire.
The suspect drove away from the scene.
Kroger released a synopsis of what happened in the incident that largely matched the police department’s narrative.
“No arrests were made and the officer is still suffering from minor pain and bruising. This is still an active investigation,” Kroger’s Delta Division said.
Krissy Dees shops at Kroger in Cordova every week but says Monday felt different.
“It’s just scary. You know, you just don’t know,” she said. “I don’t think it should have gotten to that point.”
