A Mid-South school district is changing the way parents apply for free and reduced lunches

OXFORD, Miss. — A Mid-South school district is changing the way parents apply for the free and reduced lunch program.

This is the first year the program is being offered online in the Oxford School District in Mississippi.

In the past parents had to fill out the paper applications but doing everything online is going to make things a lot easier.

Parents like Kendra Whitehead who has two children in Oxford Schools knows a lot of people who can benefit from the reduced lunch program.

She said many of them live in her apartment complex where she`s the manager.

“Probably three-fourths of my tenants. We`re low income so they have to qualify under a income limit so that`s all the income they have, so I know a lot of them here already get reduced or free,” she said.

Kelly Graeber who`s a spokesperson for the district said parents can get to the online application process 24/7.

She said in the past, going through hundreds of paper applications wasn`t easy.

“With paper, it would take us longer to process because we were having to go through paper. With this being online we get the form instantly and we`re able to process it quicker on our end,” she said.

Graeber said parents who don`t have access to computers don`t have to worry.

“We`re offering to give them that one on one appointment that they can make with us to help them fill out an online application,” she said.

Parents can also access this by using their smart phones.
