MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is recovering after firefighters say he jumped into the Mississippi River naked Wednesday afternoon.
Crews worked for over an hour to rescue him.
Firefighters tell WREG the man was in no hurry to get out of the water, but they finally got him into an ambulance at Mud Island Park.
The man jumped in naked near the Metal Museum.
Firefighters said he kept swimming away from them and refused their repeated attempts to get him into a boat.
They think the current carried him more than seven miles before an officer was finally able to grab him and force him out of the river.
Kirk Lock with the Memphis Fire Department explained, “He basically did not want to be helped. We were trying to throw him life jackets and tow ropes, and he refused any kind of help.”
Fire officials are not sure whether the man has a mental condition, but they did say he is expected to be fine, physically.
