Airways Middle will likely close due to poor test scores

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Monday night Chania, a first year student at Airways Middle School, learned it will also be her last.

Shelby County Schools will shut down Airways and move all students to Sherwood Middle, pending board approval.

The state hired “Yes Prep” to run the school, but at the last-minute, they backed out.

The state let SCS keep the school, but only if it is designed to bring grades up, called an i-zone school.

“Once a school joins the i-zone, we trust it’s in great hands,” said Letita Aaron, with the Achievement School District.

Parents, school board members, even the city council stepped into the debate.

“Airways was always targeted, always looked at for under performance and  under enrollment. When you set a school up like, that what do you expect,” said Memphis City  Council member Wanda Halbert.

Tuesday, the school board is expected to move more students.

One board member said it’s happening too often, but their hands are tied from the state.

“We keep going through this over and over again it’s not helping our children,” said Stephanie Love, Shelby County School Board member.
