MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Alan Crone was officially named to the Memphis City Council on Tuesday.
Council members voted to appoint him to Shea Flinn’s District Nine seat.
Flinn recently stepped down to accept a position at the Memphis Chamber.
Eight people addressed the council asking for the position.
“For the next 30 days, it’s the budget,” Crone told WREG referring to his first hurdle on the council.
Crone said he wants to help build a city his children will want to stay in.
The only way to do that he said was to focus on economic development, crime prevention and cleaning up the city.
The attorney also served as the former chair of the Shelby County Republican Party, and regularly appears on Channel 3’s Informed Sources segment.
Still, his appointment was controversial.
“This council is not going to do the right thing,” Memphis Police Association President Mike Williams told council members.
He said they had ulterior motives.
Williams and many others from the police and fire community came to show support for Fran Triplett, the wife of a Memphis Police officer and a regular at city proceedings.
Triplett had the support of some council members, like Janis Fullilove, because she said she has picked apart the budget and shown its inaccuracies.
“The council said they wanted accuracy and transparency, and I’ve produced that for over 11 and a half months. So, obviously, that is not what they are looking for,” Triplett told WREG.
Regardless, Crone vowed not to run for the City Council seat this fall.
He said he wants to be dedicated to the tasks at hand.
