Alcorn State and UAPB to play in this year’s Southern Heritage Classic

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Southern Heritage Classic match has officially been set for September 27, with the Alcorn State Braves taking on the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions.

Southern Heritage Classic Organizer Fred Jones has been quiet about plans to move forward after Tennessee State University announced it wouldn’t return in January.

Jones announces that Alcorn State and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff are set to go head-to-head at the Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.

“It was a lot of nervous moments, but we stayed with it and stayed prayerful,” Jones said.

“I think you are going to see something pleasantly surprised,” said Jones. “They are going to rise to the occasion.”

UAPB is making its third appearance, but this is the first for Alcorn State. They are replacing TSU, which has played the classic since it started in 1990.

“I think the school (TSU) is great for the game, and it’s just sad to see it happen like this,” said Bobby Bradley, Cozy Corner Restaurant Owner.  “I was a member of the Aristocrat of Bands. And so, Tennessee State has a special place in my heart. And they’ve been coming here for a very long time.”

Jones said that the schools have earned nearly $16 million, so it is a benefit to them, but the biggest benefit is that it allows Memphians to have a good time and show visitors what the Bluff City is all about.
