MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An alleged exhibitionist accused of exposing himself to women around Midtown has been found.
Bryant K. Smith, 30, was indicted by a grand jury last week on one count of stalking and five counts of indecent exposure, all misdemeanors. His bond was set at $5,000.
Investigators said that on mornings between Dec. 1, 2017, and Jan. 19, 2018, Smith drove a white Kia Optima slowly behind at least five different women who were walking or jogging in Central Gardens and Cooper-Young.
He would ask them for directions and then expose his penis to them or masturbate in front of them as he sat in the driver’s seat. In some cases, they said, Smith also made lewd comments to the women, according to the District Attorney General’s Office.
Jason Whitworth, with Cooper Young Neighborhood Watch, says they have been catching Smith driving the same car on the neighborhood’s security camera’s since December.
WREG told you about some of the incidents.
Whitworth showed us the video when he says he actually saw Smith following a woman and tried to confront him.
“You can see that same white Kia Optima that you see in plenty of videos, and he’s easing behind her,” he said. “He struck in Cooper-Young several times. He also went to Central Gardens, Annesdale and all over Midtown.”
Whitworth says he turned all of the footage over to police who used it to build a case and make an arrest.
We knocked on Smith’s South Memphis apartment listed on court records since he posted bond, but no one came to the door.
We also left a message for Smith, so if we hear back we’ll let you know.
He’s due in court July 27.
Whitworth just hopes this is a lesson learned.
“I think, surely, given the indictment and arrest this would deter most people from getting out there and doing this again,” he said.
