Amazon to hire 3,200 employees in Memphis, starting pay over $17 an hour

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Thousands of new jobs are coming to Memphis as Amazon announces it is ready to hire.

The company announced it is kicking off a hiring blitz across the United States and Canada, looking to hire 75,000 workers.

Amazon confirmed to WREG on Friday that 3,200 of those employees will be in Memphis. Salaries for the operation and transportation jobs in Memphis will start at “over $17 an hour,” along with comprehensive health insurance, and sign-on bonuses up to $1,000, the company said.

Bobby White, with the Greater Memphis Chamber, says Amazon’s announcement is a feather in the cap of the chamber’s economic development team and a sign the shipping giant is another recognized name betting on Memphis.

“And they’re investing in Memphis, and I think that’s the most important part. And it’s really critical when it comes to “brands” and “brand” names people know and regard,” White said. “A job is great for our community. We recognize the power that it has as it relates to people being able to take care of families, improving neighborhoods, it all traces back to a good job.”

Additionally, Amazon said a $100 benefit will be offered to any new hire who has already been vaccinated for COVID-19.

Amazon has a big operation here with several properties spread out across town, including a warehouse and distribution center. The company’s footprint is getting bigger with a new fulfillment center in Byhalia and a second delivery station in Memphis.
