MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The suspect at the center of a statewide Amber Alert has surrendered to police.
According to police, 21-year-old Stevie Boyd has been taken into custody and the baby is safe. The child appears to be unharmed and will be checked by paramedics on the scene.
The news comes several hours after police confirmed they were negotiating with Boyd, who was accused of kidnapping little Steven Smith around 10:50 p.m. Tuesday night after showing up at the mother’s home. He allegedly grabbed the infant and walked out of the apartment.
When the mother and another woman tried to stop him, he turned and fired multiple shots at them. Several hours later, an Amber Alert was issued for the missing child.
WREG’s Melissa Moon reported from the apartment complex during Daybreak Wednesday and said officers were still on the scene hours later. She said they were on a loud speaker but couldn’t hear what they were saying. A resident told her officers were calling for the man.
Police also reportedly told people to get out of their apartments near where they believe the suspect may be.
Moon noted that there was also a TACT team on the scene.
On Wednesday, WREG discovered a warrant has been issued for Boyd on aggravated assault and especially aggravated kidnapping charges.
In June, he was also accused of hitting his pregnant girlfriend in the face and kicking her in the stomach during a domestic incident. He appears he was given probation and community service for the offense and granted diversion.
Boyd did not have custodial rights, police said.
It appears he was still on probation when he allegedly kidnapped his son Tuesday night.
He’s scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
