MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Animal Control officers will provide straw to owners to help keep their pets warm.
Officers will canvas the city, particularly areas where they know many pets are kept outside, to remind pet owners to take extra precaution during dangerously cold weather. They will encourage owners to take their pets inside or will leave straw for the pet if the owner isn’t home.
If you see an animal without shelter, call (901) 636-PAWS or email James.Rogers@memphistn.gov.
MAS also offered the following reminders:
– Never leave a pet in the car during cold weather and please do not let your pet off the leash into the snow or ice.
– If you have an outside cat or you help feral cats in your area, you can provide a small insulated dog house for their protection.
– Hyperthermia affects pets, and sidewalks are not kind to a pet’s paws.
– Avoid exposing your pet to antifreeze.
– Keep your pets entertained with toys and games indoors or even visit a doggie day care center.
Officers also dropped off dog houses, lined with straw, at some residences.
