MEMPHIS, Tenn. — At least three people, including two children, were hurt in a fire late Wednesday night at the Country Oaks Apartments off of Kirby Parkway in Hickory Hill.
The fire started at around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in an upstairs unit and spread to several other apartments.
Neighbors said a mother and her 13-year-old daughter had to jump from a second-floor apartment to escape the fire.
A 6-year-old girl in a first-floor apartment was also burned when she was hit by debris from the fire. The child’s grandmother, who was out of town at the time, said the little girl was not seriously hurt.
“She was coming out of the door, and some of the debris fell on her arm from upstairs,” Virgie Banks said.
The Red Cross is now assisting at least 12 people displaced by the fire.
The fire was started by an electrical malfunction in the attic, Memphis Fire said. The building did have a working smoke alarm.
