(Memphis) A surprise in the disappearance of a 7-week-old baby girl – the mother’s attorney told WREG Monday he expects prosecutors to charge her with murder.
Andrea Walker faced a judge Monday for aggravated child abuse. She is still in jail until her bond hearing next week.
“Do not rush to judgement. This is not Salem, Massachusetts,” said attorney Leslie Ballin.
Ballin is afraid this could turn into a witch hunt for his client Walker.
Police said Walker is not helping with their search.
She told investigators she left baby Aniston Walker with her 3-year-old when she took another child to school Thursday morning.
When she came back a half an hour later, Aniston was gone.
“I anticipate that the charges will be upgraded at some point. I’ll be in discussions with the prosecutor. Even though I’m telling you the charges may be upgraded, do not rush to judgment in this case,” said Ballin.
Even if police never find Aniston, District Attorney Amy Weirich said murder charges can be filed if there is enough evidence.
“Anytime we charge an individual and an individual is arrested, they can be increased, changed or dismissed,” said Weirich.
After three days if looking, police called off the search for Aniston, saying they didn’t find any clues in Walker’s North Memphis neighborhood.
Now, they are waiting for a lead or for someone to confess.
“I can tell you in response to what authorities have said, that is that she is not been forthcoming. To me that simply can be she has not told them what they wanted to hear,” said Ballin.
Walker’s bond reduction hearing is set for Tuesday, January 21st.
