SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — A homicide was reported Thursday morning in a rural area on the border of Shelby and Tipton counties near Atoka, and local and state authorities spent the day searching for two subjects believed to be connected to the incident.
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the homicide, but has provided little other information since Thursday morning.
Lt. Anthony Buckner with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says his office received the call at 9:11 Thursday.
Throughout the day deputies blocked access to Tracy Road between Portersville Road and Highway 14 (Austin Peay) as detectives worked to piece together clues in the homicide.
People nearby told WREG the victim was a 24-year-old man.
“Never seen anything like this out here,” said Welton Degraffreed, who has lived in the area for 22 years.
Initial reports said law enforcement was looking for two people connected to the crime. And at some point there was a chase.
The search for the suspects has left residents feeling uneasy.
“I’m scared. I have a niece that’s 7, fixing to be 8, and a nephew that’s 13,” a resident said.
As soon as we have more information, such as a suspect description, we will let you know.
