MARSHALL COUNTY, Miss. — A Marshall County deputy was shot at least three times before the suspect barricaded himself in a house and held law enforcement in a standoff for hours Friday.
The sheriff and investigators were at scene on Hunters Run off Cayce Road around 7 p.m.
The deputy who was shot was taken by helicopter to Regional One in Memphis. Sources said Saturday morning that he is alert and had surgery on his leg. A bullet-proof vest likely saved his life.
According to Marshall County Sheriff Kenny Dickerson, earlier Friday evening, a deputy confronted a suspect as part of a narcotics investigation. That suspect led the deputy on a high-speed chase that ended at a home on Hunters Run.
That’s where the suspect got out of the car and shot the deputy several times, Dickerson said.
The suspect then barricaded himself inside that home.
Deputies cut power to the house. A SWAT vehicle was outside the home, and deputies were on a loudspeaker trying to convince the suspect to talk with them.
Around 10:30, Dickerson said the suspect walked out of the house, pulled out a gun and shot himself. He has not been officially identified.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will take over the case.
“Everyone knows the area around here is nothing but drugs and drinking. That’s the way it is nowadays,” neighbor Steve Sharber said as the standoff was happening.
“I hope everybody’s praying for him (the deputy) because that’s what he’s out there for to keep us safe,” Sharber said.
