Avoid Scams During Ice Storm

(Memphis)  As the Mid-South braces for a possible ice storm, crooks are already likely thinking about how to take advantage of consumers who might need help once the inclement weather passes.

Ice storms can cause significant damage to homes, power lines and buildings.

However, people who are anxious to get their homes and yards back to normal should be on the lookout for scams.

According to the Mid-South Better Business Bureau, those scams typically involve clean-up efforts, tree or limb removal, as well as fence and home repairs.

BBB Tips for Dealing with Storm Damage:

– Be wary of door-to-door workers who show up unsolicited offering to make repairs.
– Check with your insurance company about policy coverage and specific filing requirements. Keep copies of receipts for emergency repairs for reimbursement later.
– Don’t be pressured into signing a long-term contract. Make temporary repairs if necessary.
– Take time to shop around for contractors, get competitive bids, and check out the contractor.
– Get everything in writing. Review it carefully before signing.
– Never pay the full amount of repairs in advance.

Price gouging laws also go into effect since Tennessee and Arkansas have each declared a state of emergency.
