MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A baby was killed and another person injured following a car crash in Hickory Hill.

According to police, two ambulances were called to the area of Winchester and Kirby Parkway after a vehicle overturned during a crash.

Police say a baby was pronounced dead on the scene while another person was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition. Authorities have not said what caused the crash.

We spoke with a man who works across the street from the scene of the crash. He didn’t want to be identified but said he tried to help.

“I even walked out there to see if I could help, but a young man had jumped into the truck and got her out,” the man said.

That man was able to save the woman, but it was sadly too late for the young child inside.

“But he tried to free the baby. The baby is in the car seat when he went to free the baby,” the man said. “I think he knew the baby was deceased then because he got out shaking his head.”

The news rocked everyone who came upon the accident, but none more than family members that started to gather one by one as they learned the news.

“The mother of the young lady that was in the car, she was out there just crying real loud,” one witness told WREG.

Several people told WREG they see drivers run red lights at the intersection all the time, leading to many close calls. They hope cameras at the intersection provide some answers, and changes are made to prevent another family from this kind of pain.
