MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Plans to build a hotel were thrown out, but now Ballet Memphis said it wants to develop the old French Quarter Inn into something new.

The Ballet School and Company planned to expand its reach from its current location in East Memphis to Overton Square off of Cooper and Madison.

“It was very clear to us that Midtown would be the best place for us,” said Board President Gretchen McLennon,

She said  they want to add to the already thriving arts community in the area.

“We also want to be easily accessible. We want the arts to be accessible here in Memphis, and we want Ballet Memphis to be more accessible to the Memphis community. So it’s about ballet but it’s also about movement, and dance, and a celebration of art and life itself. So we want our building to reflect that as well,” she said.

The renderings for the new building showed plans for glass windows all along Madison so people can see into classes.

It also would give them an opportunity to showcase what Ballet Memphis has to offer.
