MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The turkey is already in the oven in some houses Wednesday night, but some people will take the bird in the yard Thursday and dip it into a deep fryer.

Firefighters want to warn you to take all safety measures if you fry your turkey because your house could go up in flames.

Stick to this advice:

  • Don’t fill the pot to the top with oil. The bird will push the oil up and over.
  • Keep that hot pot away from the house, trees, bushes and plants.
  • Turn the flame off before putting the turkey in the pot.
  • Make sure the turkey is thawed before frying.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher close by.
