MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The sweet and soulful sounds draw people from around the world to Beale Street.
Those who make a living on tourists are starting to wonder if Beale is developing a new reputation.
A group of musicians said violence seems to be creeping up on Beale, and it has to be in the back of tourist’s minds as they pay a visit to Memphis’ number one attraction.
“Most people who come from out-of-town, they are aware of what they come in to as far as the reputation,” said a guitarist.
Business owners along Beale told us they were concerned after this weekend’s violence.
In one incident, a soldier was murdered defending his girlfriend from a heckler.
In another case, Memphis Police officer was assaulted while trying to stop a crime.
Some business owners worried people would be less likely to come down for the long Memorial Day weekend.
A carriage driver, however, said he didn’t see a change, except for the rainy weather.
Tourists will tell you they’ve heard of the city’s crime problems; one Arkansas man even came armed.
Overall they judged the city based on their experiences, most of which were everything we want Memphis to be known for.
