(Memphis) An abandoned historic building in downtown Memphis is coming back to life.
A group of community activists are cleaning up the Tennessee Brewery, and they plan to put a cafe and beer garden inside, hoping it sparks revitalization.
It’s a temporary plan. It will be here for six weeks starting April 24.
“We are trying to show people there is another use for it,” said Kerry Hayes, one of the brains behind the project.
Without any help from the city, a group of people are sprucing up part of the building and courtyard. There will be live music, local craft beer, food trucks, a cafe, movie screenings, and workshops.
They’re calling it “Untapped.”
“People want to be in this building. They want to be in this space. They want to explore it. They want to see what it’s like,” said Hayes.
Since the plans were announced, Hayes said local businesses donated supplies and decorations, helped with the renovation and offered support, all hoping this project will recruit new business, clean up blight and continue to expand the downtown area.
“Our purpose is really to show people there is hidden value in these buildings. There is real hidden value and economic potential in a lot of these historic buildings,” said Hayes.
He doesn’t know if this project will turn into something permanent, but he’s hoping someone will discover the hidden value in the historic building on Tennessee Street.
All events will be free and open to the public. It will be open April 24th through June 1st from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursdays and Sundays, and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
