Ben Carson stops in Memphis ahead of Super Tuesday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson made a stop in Memphis Sunday.

He worshiped at Bellevue Baptist Church, before privately touring Alpha Omega Veterans Services.

A small but inspired crowd greeted Carson as he left the organization’s building.

“I’ve been following him since the 80s, he’s very intelligent, very smart,” Belinda Hill said.

Hill was just one of dozens in the crowd not allowed inside the event, but she waited patiently hoping for a glimpse of the presidential hopeful.

“Hopefully we can just see him and wave at him, so he knows there are people here who support him,” supporter Carolyn Hale said.

At the end of 2015, Carson had a surge in the polls, but now he sits at the bottom of the Republican pool.

“Do you think you can turn things around?” WREG’s Elise Preston asked.

“I hope so, nothing has changed about me,” Carson replied.

Inside Alpha Omega, Carson, with his wife by his side, privately addressed the media.

Sunday’s visit was Carson’s second trip to the Mid-South this year. Last month, he stopped in West Memphis.

With Super Tuesday right around the corner, he wasn’t the only one making a last minute stop. Carson is the fourth candidate in just a matter of days to make a stop here in Mid-South.

“It really shows something for the city. I’m grateful they chose here,” Hale said.

Meanwhile, Carson is hoping Tennessee and Arkansas voters choose him Tuesday. Mississippians hit the polls March 8.

“People are not ready for me to stand down. I believe America is for the people, not the political class,” Carson said.
