MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Berlin Boyd was appointed to fill the vacant District 7 seat Tuesday.
He received 7 votes to Bryan Carson’s 5 votes.
Audrey Jones and Barbara Swearengen Ware each received one vote in the first round of voting.
The vacancy was created when councilman Lee Harris quit upon winning his race for state senator.
Frayser residents invited the seven people hoping to be considered for the seat to speak at a forum last week, but only Swearengen Ware, Jones, and Boyd showed up.
Boyd took over Swearengen Ware’s seat in 2011, and said at last week’s meeting he wants to serve the city again.
“I want to be that voice. I want to be that advocated for those who are voiceless,” he said.
Boyd also said he wants to create a task force with different agencies to tackle crime.
