(NEXSTAR) – Taylor Cassidy, a digital creator, uses her platform to educate her audience on Black culture and music.
Cassidy, who has over 76 million likes on TikTok, describes her channel as “Black History like you’ve never learned before.”
Her videos include topics such as “3 facts about Malcolm X you missed,” “The history of 40 acres and a mule” and “the history of Billie Holiday.”
The 22-year-old says while her high school didn’t spend a lot of time on Black history, at home it was a different story.
“My parents made it a priority in the house to know your Black history,” Cassidy said. “By the time I was a junior, I wanted to share the way that they taught it to me with the world, which was with joy and persistence and fun.”
Cassidy said she’s been dishing out fast Black history lessons on her channel for about six years, but had the good fortune to find early success.
“I thankfully had a platform before starting the series, but the very first one that I made, which was about Percy Julian, who was a very important Black chemist, went viral right off the bat,” Cassidy said.
Cassidy credits her channel with opening up a number of opportunities for her, including an upcoming book for middle schoolers called Black History Is Your History. Cassidy says the book is due out Oct. 14, but is already available for pre-order.
