MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Several boats were destroyed by fire at the Mud Island marina in the Wolf River harbor Saturday morning.
Fire officials say they received their first report around 7 a.m. Smoke could be seen rising from the harbor from all over downtown.
The Memphis Fire Department said at least one of the boats was a total loss. No injuries were reported, and the boats were empty.
“We saw this cloud of smoke, it was humongous,” Robert Baldwin, a witnessed of the marina fire, said. “And we didn’t know where it was coming from.”
As it turns out, at least three boats caught fire here at the Mud Island Marina, around 7 a.m. Saturday.
Investigators said they are still working to figure out what caused the fire.

The Memphis Fire Department responded to an alarm of fire at 57 Mud Island Drive, Saturday, November 7, 2020 at 7:02 a.m. Upon arrival on the scene, firefighters reported heavy fire visible from the Mud Island Marina. Twenty-two (22) pieces of Fire/Rescue/EMS equipment and approximately fifty-seven (57) emergency response personnel ultimately responded to the call. Division Chief D. Atkins was the commanding officer of this incident.
The fire was brought under control at 8:13 a.m. One firefighter was transported in non-critical condition to Regional One Burn Unit with 2nd degree burns to his hand. A sixty-six year old male sustained 2nd degree burns to his forearm. He was treated and released on the scene. The marina and seven (7) boats, including Memphis Fire & Police Catamaran sustained smoke, fire and water damage. Total damage is estimated at approximately $575,000.00 boats and $200,000.00 structure. The origin and cause of the fire was determined to be electrical in the engine compartment of a boat docked in the marina.
