FORT BRAGG — U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl appeared before a judge on Tuesday to face charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.

The hearing only last a few minutes as the defendant deferred entering a plea.

In addition, he also told the judge he has not decided whether he wants to face a court-martial with a jury or without.

Bergdahl was the soldier who walked away from his post in Afghanistan back in 2009 and was subsequently captured by the Taliban.

He was released five years later in May 2014 during a prisoner swap that received a lot of criticism.

Bergdahl was exchanged for five Guantanamo Bay detainees.

If convicted, CBS 46 reported he could be sentenced to life in prison on the misbehavior charge and five years for desertion.

He is scheduled to be back in court on January 12 for a motion hearing.
