SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — A 10-year-old boy is dead and his 6-year-old sister injured after they fell through a frozen pond at a home Sunday morning.
The Shelby County Fire Department and sheriff’s office responded to the 8000 block of Brunswick Road east of Millington around 11 a.m.
Authorities said both children were rushed to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. The boy was pronounced dead.
“It’s a low probability event with, unfortunately a high consequence and our hearts go out to the family right now,” Brent Perkins, of the Shelby County Fire Department, said.
“So the bottom line is the bodies of water down here normally don’t freeze with enough thickness to support a person on it and it can be very dangerous,” Perkins said.
First responders from Shelby County and Millington answered the call Sunday morning after it was reported that the boy boy and his sister had fallen through the ice on a pond near their house.
As mentioned, the boy drowned, despite efforts of millington firefighters who launched an inflatable boat, donned dry suits and searched the freezing water.
But they couldn’t save the boy in time.
“The victim will go into the water and their body is completely assaulted by what’s happening. It’s so cold and breathing is next to impossible,” Perkins said.
The girl was still in the hospital Monday, but no condition was available.
