Boys and Girls Club works with volunteers to help make a safer community

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Dozens of volunteers are using their hands to help make a safer place for kids in Memphis.

On Thursday, it was labor of love at Bernal E. Smith Boys and Girls Club in Hickory Hill.

They built an entire playground in just six hours.

People in the community said this will mean more than monkey bars and swings for kids in the neighborhood.

The Car Max Foundation, Boys and Girls Club and KaBoom worked on the project.

KaBoom is a national non-profit organization that builds playgrounds all over the country.

Vice President of Operations for the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Memphis Vinson Smith said something as simple as a playground will boost membership.

“Across the city we average over 4,000 kids a year.  Last year we had over 4,700 kids actually attend the Boys and Girls Club; of that number that are actually enrolled, 3,567, $10 for membership,” he said.

Smith said the numbers show that the Boys and Girls Club is making a difference in Memphis.

Students learn computer skills and leadership programs that keep them on the right track.
