MEMPHIS, Tenn. — If you want to help people, it’s as simple as getting up and doing it.
That’s the promise behind Cathedral of Hope’s mission to feed the homeless.
Each week, members of the church volunteer to cook food and serve it to the homeless in Downtown Memphis.
Around 11:30 a.m. on Thursdays, the crowd starts to gather near Danny Thomas and Poplar.
People know when the clock strikes noon, they’ll be able to get a free hot meal.
Towanna Murphy, “We love Memphis, and we want to make sure that Memphis is taken care of.”
Cathedral of Hope is a small church with a big heart.
Members say the idea to reach out to the hungry was their pastor’s idea.
Pastor Nehemiah Kennedy buys the food and secures donations while members do the rest.
From 50 to 75 people show up every week for the food.
Right now, the volunteers are there just one day a week, but it’s one day those who are helped won’t have to worry about a hot meal.
