MEMPHIS, Tenn. —  Culinary students at the Memphis Health Careers Academy traveled to Washington, D.C.to compete in a national cooking competition and prepare a one of a kind dish for members of Congress.

“We’re preparing an explosive chimichanga surprise, a sensational salad blast and apple cinnamon delight,” said one student.

The students cooked up a win on the state level for the honor to travel to the nation’s capital.

The team was one of ten from across the country vying for top honors.

To win the meal had to be tasty, but also meet certain criteria.

The students told us they couldn’t add any sugar, it had to be a specific amount of calories, and restrict added sodium.

“All of us had the part of coming up with the meal. Then after we came up with the meal,  we assigned dishes for each person,” said Raijeen Davis.

Members of Congress were not the only ones who got to enjoy their culinary masterpiece.

They told WREG it would also be put on the menu in Shelby County Schools this fall.

“We hate school lunches. This gives an opportunity to change what’s on our plates when we come to lunch,” said Shanterica Batts.

Batts was excited about a possible future in the culinary world.

She said she would like to own a food truck.

Her experience at Memphis Health Careers Academy no doubt put her on a path to do just that.
